Lawmakers of the House of Representatives have urged relevant law enforcement agencies including the National Judicial Council to ensure the implementation of tough measures against murder, manslaughter and other femicidal acts across states in Nigeria.
The call by the lawmakers follows a resolution as the House members adopted a motion moved by their colleague from Rivers State, Awaji-Inombek Abiante and three others.
Abiante had noted that every human on the face of earth is entitled to his or her right to live as a fundamental human right, guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution as amended.
Decrying the growing cases of murder, manslaughter among others which leads to the termination of life, Abiante called for justice for citizens lost via these acts of injustice.
“Fernicide, which is the intentional killing of women and girls due to their gender, has become a significant concern, with several reported cases in recent years,” Abiante said.
Following the adoption of the motion, the leadership of the House urged the National Judicial Council to facilitate the designation of special divisions that would expedite actions on such cases.
