INEC announces date for supplementary by-election in Zamfara

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled Thursday, August 21, for the supplementary election in Kaura-Namoda South Constituency, Zamfara State.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mahmuda Isah, announced the date during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau, assuring voters and political parties that the commission is fully prepared for a smooth and credible poll.

Dr. Isah explained that the supplementary election became necessary after the Returning Officer, Professor Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau, declared the earlier by-election inconclusive.

“The margin between the leading party and the runner-up was less than the total number of Permanent Voter Cards collected in polling units where elections were cancelled,” he said.

INEC appealed to all parties, security agencies, and stakeholders to collaborate to ensure the success of the August 21 exercise.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high between the two leading parties. The Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) rejected claims by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that soldiers were used to intimidate voters during the earlier poll.

Speaking to journalists in Gusau, APC Publicity Secretary Yusuf Idris dismissed the allegations as “baseless and unfounded,” stressing that security forces were only present to maintain peace and prevent electoral malpractice.

He added that “the PDP is only trying to smear the image of security agencies in a bid to discredit the process.”

Idris further stated that residents of Kaura-Namoda South turned out in large numbers to support the APC candidate, describing the turnout as evidence of the party’s popularity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
