INEC launches 2025 voter registration exercise with online and in‑person options

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will begin its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) for the 2025–2026 cycle on 18 August 2025, offering both online pre-registration and in-person registration at designated centres across Nigeria.

In a statement released this week, INEC confirmed that online registration will open via its portal cvr.inecnigeria.org from 18 August, followed by in-person registration at local INEC offices and approved centres from 25 August, operating Monday to Friday between 9 am and 3 pm.

Professor Sam Egwu, Benue’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, explained that the exercise, mandated by the constitution, will allow eighteen-year-olds who missed previous exercises, those who need card replacements, and voters requesting corrections or transfers to update their details.

INEC has emphasised that all 37 states and the Federal Capital Territory will participate, utilising state offices, local government centres, and other designated venues to make registration accessible.

A separate update from Ondo State confirmed local preparations: of its 2.05 million registered voters, 1.76 million PVCs have already been issued, leaving nearly 296,000 cards uncollected.

The CVR there will run until August 2026, with a pause in December 2025 for data harvest, before resuming in early 2026.

INEC urged citizens not to pay bribes to register, warning that multiple registrations could incur fines up to ₦100,000 or one year’s imprisonment.
