Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said Nigerians should stop placing all the blame for insecurity on President Bola Tinubu.
He insisted that state governors must also be held responsible for the security situation in their respective states.
The former Abia State governor said insecurity cannot be solved by the President alone.
According to him, governors have a major role to play because they are closer to the people and understand the peculiar challenges in their states.
Kalu urged governors across the country to take full responsibility for protecting lives and property. He maintained that effective state-level action would significantly reduce insecurity nationwide.
The lawmaker said he successfully handled security issues during his time as governor of Abia State.
He noted that the state was regarded as one of the safest in the country under his leadership.
Kalu made these remarks in Ekoli Edda, in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. He spoke with journalists during a New Year visit to the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, whom he described as one of his political sons.
While speaking, the senator praised Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru. He said the governor has shown commitment to securing the lives and property of residents in the state.
The Abia North senator stressed that the current security challenges require decisive action at the state level. He warned against shifting all responsibility to the federal government.
Kalu said, “People are saying President Tinubu should do this and do that to end insecurity, no! When I was governor, I took charge of Abia. Nobody can move anywhere without securing the lives and property of our people.”
He added that governors must return to proactive leadership on security matters. He pointed to Ebonyi State as an example of what can be achieved when a governor takes charge.
Kalu said, “So, the governors should come back and secure their states the way it is happening in Ebonyi State. The Ebonyi State governor is securing his state. Every governor should secure his state and Nigeria will be safe.”
He concluded by calling for cooperation between state governments and security agencies.
According to him, Nigeria’s security will improve once governors fully embrace their constitutional responsibilities.
