Various world leaders and the United Nations (UN) agencies on Monday posted wishes and messages on social media to mark the International Day of the Girl Child 2021. This year, the theme for the day is ‘Digital generation. Our generation’.
The official Twitter handle of a former Vice-President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar joined prominent persons and institutions from around the world to celebrate the girl child.
Atiku posted a message on his verified Twitter handle on Monday afternoon: “The girl child is a treasured asset to the family, community and country. On this #DayofTheGirl , I repeat my call for collective effort to eliminate all barriers, including the right to an education that infringes on the rights of the #GirlChild to achieve their full potentials.”
For former BBNaija housemate, Nengi, she urged everyone to be united, “to show that the growth of girls around the world is a necessity”.
“Let us all come together to show that the growth of girls around the world is a necessity. Today, celebrate girls’ rights wherever you are and push for focus on the Safety, rights & education of girls.
#InternationalDayOfGirlChild
#DayOfTheGirl,” Nengi tweeted via her verified Twitter handle.
The observation of the International Day of the Girl Child supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality they face worldwide based upon their gender. POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this inequality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence against women and forced child marriage.
