The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced plans to declare a sit-at-home in Lagos State to press home the demand for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the announcement was made by IPOB’s factional leader, Simon Ekpa, on Wednesday night.
Ekpa said that the sit-at-home will take place after the two-week-long sit-at-home in the South East.
“Biafrans in Lagos should get ready to be part of the demand to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Ekpa said in a tweet.
“We are coming to Lagos after the 2 week-long sit at home. It is time to show your solidarity to this call for justice. Biafrans in Lagos will lockdown. The consultation will start soon.”
The two-week sit-at-home in the South East is scheduled to begin on July 31 and end on August 14. Ekpa said that the sit-at-home is to demand “the immediate and unconditional release of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who remains illegally detained at the DSS dungeon”.
He also said that the sit-at-home is in preparation for “Biafra’s self-referendum and to further put the world on notice that Biafrans are taking their future into their own hands.”
The sit-at-home order comes hours after a closed-door meeting of South East political leaders where they sought an audience with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on resolving the security situation in the region.
The meeting was attended by governors of the South East, traditional rulers, and other political leaders. The leaders expressed concern about the increasing spate of violence in the region and called on the federal government to take urgent steps to address the situation.
