IPOB calls for census, gives reason

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Saturday, called for a census in Nigeria to be conducted ‘to determine how many southeasterners were killed in the region because of the promise of presidency’.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the proscribed group’s message was relayed by Kingsley ‘Kanunta’ Kanu, younger brother of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kingsley, a top member of the outlawed organization called for the release of all pro-Biafra agitators in detention facilities across Nigeria.

IPOB had accused Nigerian security forces of using excessive force and killing over 100 people during a recent “repressive campaign” against separatist agitators in the country’s restive southeast.

The group, which has an armed wing (the Eastern Security Network), is opposed to elections in Nigeria, and advocates for the immediate break up of Nigeria. Thus, the Nigerian government classifies it as a terrorist organization.

“#IPOB is calling for a census in #Biafraland to determine, how many Biafrans that were killed in #EasternRegion because, of a mere political promises (presidency). All #BiafranActivist in various detention centers in Nigeria should be released now,” Kanunta Kanu wrote on his known Twitter handle.

The last time Nigeria conducted a census was in 2006. Another one is schedule for this year (2022).
