Islamic group to Tinubu: Find solution to hunger and mass poverty among ordinary Nigerians

An Islamic group, The Companion – Association of Muslim Men in Business and the Professions, has implored President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action to resolve the prevalent hunger and mass poverty tormenting ordinary Nigerians.

Engr. Kamil Olalekan, the National Ameer of The Companion, made the plea during the launch of the 2023 Dawah Holiday Programme (DPH) at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun State.

Olalekan emphasized the pressing need for tangible measures to alleviate poverty and curb the soaring prices of essential goods and services.

He urged the government to implement policies to reduce hunger and poverty, emphasizing the necessity to counter the alarming rise in the cost of living.

Olalekan advocated for increased social investment and free meals to the most vulnerable citizens for six months, alongside salary adjustments in line with inflation rates.

“The government must adopt policies that address hunger, poverty, and the escalating cost of essential items. Increased social investment and free feeding for the extremely poor for six months are necessary. Salaries should be revised to match inflation rates,” stated Olalekan.

Amidst economic challenges arising from oil subsidy removal and currency devaluation, Olalekan advised prudent spending and contentment with available resources, especially among children and youths.

He stressed, “This period calls for frugality and avoidance of waste in line with Islamic teachings. Children and youth should understand the economic situation and be content with what their parents can provide.”

Regarding the exclusion of universities from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), Olalekan applauded the decision but urged tertiary institutions to exhibit responsible financial management.

While the Islamic group convened for the 2023 Dawah Holiday Programme, the theme “Towards A Striving Ummah” was chosen to address the evolving challenges faced by Muslim youths amid global changes.

The event gathered over 300 Muslim youths for comprehensive Islamic training sessions over 11 days.
