Terrorists of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter of Boko Haram, on Wednesday night launched an attack on Wulgo town in Marte Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.
POLITICS NIGERIA learned that the attack was to avenge the killing by Nigerian security forces of two Islamic State (ISIS) Sheikhs.
It is not yet clear the magnitude of the attack, but it was the fourth insurgents’ assault recorded on Wednesday alone in Nigeria. Security analysts warn that more attacks would be launched.
Unlike Boko Haram which often violently targets civilian populations, ISWAP, a branch of ISIL (ISIS), primarily targets the Nigerian military.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) estimates that the insurgency in the northern part of Nigeria and neighbouring countries has resulted in 350,000 deaths, with 314,000 of those from indirect causes.
