The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the Supreme Court judgment affirming Monday Okpebholo as governor of Edo state as a “historic win”.
In a statement on Thursday, Felix Morka, national publicity secretary of the APC, said the verdict validates the will of the people and brings finality to the legal battle over the 2024 governorship election.
A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, dismissed the appeal filed by Asue Ighodalo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which sought to nullify the result of the September 21, 2024 election.
Part of the statement read: “Our great party congratulates Governor Okpebholo on this historic victory.
“We thank our teeming members, supporters and the good people of Edo state for their steadfast support during this legal challenge.”
The party commended the judiciary for what it called a demonstration of professionalism, dedication and defence of democratic values.
“We commend the judiciary for its dedication, professionalism and commitment to the rule of law, constitutional order and defence of electoral democracy,” Morka said.
He said the judgment gives Okpebholo the clarity to continue delivering on his mandate.
“With this final judicial affirmation, Governor Okpebholo is now poised to expand and consolidate on the monumental development strides he has started since his inauguration,” the statement added.
The APC also urged opposition parties to put politics aside and support the governor’s development agenda for the state.
“We urge all concerned parties, particularly the opposition contenders, to join hands with Governor Okpebholo as he works to deliver good governance and development for the shared progress of Edo state and people,” it said.
