‘It’s heartbreaking’, Hisbah boss says after arresting 20 people for eating in public

The Kano State Hisbah Board has described the acts of adult Muslims eating in public during the Ramadan fast as heartbreaking.

The deputy commander of the board, Mujahid Aminudeen, said 20 people were arrested for eating in public on Monday.

Aminudeen said the board received reports of people engaging in such activity while others were also involved in immoral acts.

According to him, the board acts fast to salvage the situation by making arrests once it receives tip-offs on such activities.

His words, “It’s heartbreaking that in such a holy month meant for fasting, adult Muslims would be seen eating and drinking publicly. We won’t condone that, and that’s why we went out to make arrests.”

He also stated that a total of 25 people have been charged to a sharia court for prosecution over different offences.

While stating that the board does not concern itself with the activities of non-muslims, Aminudeen said some of those arrested include people with inappropriate haircuts or those wearing shorts above the knee level.

“We do get calls from people who are enraged after seeing people eating in public, and we act fast by going to the area to make arrests,” he added.
