JUST IN: 10 persons killed as cholera hits northern state

Ten people have been reportedly died from a cholera outbreak which is ravaging Adamawa State.

A health official at a specialist hospital said 10 people have died as a result of the disease outbreak in the state.

On Sunday, Jibril Ibrahim said that four deaths out of 40 cases of cholera were recorded in the state.

However, the medical official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to Punch said that as of Monday, the cases of fatality had gotten to 10 with 76 cases confirmed.

The source also lamented that residents of Yola, Adamawa state capital city were focused on self-medication rather than visiting health facilities for treatment.

“The problem is that the affected people didn’t want to seek medical attention when they were sick.

“They continued to treat themselves at home and also resorted to taking herbs until their condition got worse such that many of them could not stand up on their own, by this time, the immune system is dead,” the source said.

He called for more strategic approach towards tackling the disease outbreak while urging residents of the state to seek immediate help in the first onset of the disease.
