A boat accident on Gamoda River in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State has resulted in the deaths of five individuals, with fifteen others still unaccounted for.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Nahuce Village while the boat was transporting passengers returning from the market.
According to DSP Lawan Shisu, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, the boat, which was carrying 20 passengers, capsized around noon.
DSP Shisu confirmed the unfortunate event and detailed the immediate response to the scene.
“Today, Thursday, August 8, 2024, at approximately 1200 hours, a canoe with twenty passengers capsized while crossing Gamoda River at Nahuce Village in Taura LGA.
“Upon receiving the report, a team of policemen, local divers, and good Samaritans quickly arrived at the scene for rescue operations,” DSP Shisu reported.
The police spokesperson identified the deceased victims as:
- Abdurra’uf Mohd, 15 years old
- Suleman Ali, 20 years old
- Shafiu Mohd, 25 years old
- Ado Nafance, 75 years old
- Alasan Mohd, 16 years old
He said efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the fifteen missing passengers.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP A.T. Abdullahi, has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and extended prayers for the deceased.
