JUST IN: Activists storm Abuja court in protest against Sowore’s arrest

A coalition of activists and civil society organizations gathered outside the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, January 29, to protest the arrest and cybercrime charges filed against Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), by the Nigerian police.

The protesters, waving placards and chanting anti-government slogans, called for the immediate release of Sowore.

They argued that his only crime was exposing corruption and misconduct within the Nigerian police force.

The protesters, who were seen outside the court, carried signs with messages such as #FreeSoworeNow, #FreeAdaramolaNowAnd10Others, #EndPoliceBrutality, and #SackTheIGPNowForUnlawfulDetention.

Among those showing solidarity with the activist were the President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Afam Usigwe, and former Senator Shehu Sani.

Mrs. Ene Obi, a prominent civil society leader, who is also part of the protest, strongly condemned the police’s actions, describing the arrest as unnecessary and unjust.

She also demanded the withdrawal of charges against other arrested activists, including Adaramola and 10 others who were detained during last year’s #EndBadGovernance protests.

Sowore, who was brought to the courtroom wearing traditional attire, appeared in high spirits despite the serious legal battle he is facing.
