POLITICS NIGERIA has been furnished with photographs from the scene of an attack by gunmen in the staff quarters of UNIABUJA.
This newspaper earlier reported that Gunmeninvaded the staff quarters of the University of Abuja on Tuesday morning and abducted professor of economics, Obansa Joseph along with two of his children and several others.
A witness claimed that the gunmen stormed the senior staff quarters at Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at 1 a.m. and stayed there for around one hour. The witness requested his identity not be revealed due to fear of retaliation by the abductors and their gang members.
The names of the professor’s two abducted children could not be confirmed at the time of writing. However, the identities of the other victims were reported as “Barrister John, Fidelis and Mallam Sambo”.
UNIABUJA spokesman Habib Yakoob confirmed the attack and said the total number of victims was six.
“Yes, I just confirmed that the information is true,” said Yakoob. “Apart from the professor and his children, a non-academic staffer was also involved. They are about six victims.” Yakoob claimed that security operatives were working to retrieve the victims.
Yakoob said Obansa is a “distinguished economist of repute”. In addition to teaching at UNIABUJA, he is also a visiting professor at Veritas University, also in Abuja.
