JUST IN: Akwa Ibom Gov’t Addresses Accusation Linking Governor to Late First Lady’s Death

The Akwa Ibom State Government has issued an official response following a viral video in which Jane Edidiong Ufot, daughter of Governor Umo Eno, accused her father of being responsible for the death of his wife, the late First Lady, Patience Umo Eno.

In the video, Jane is seen saying, “I’m not a sacrifice, mummy was, but I’m not.”

“If I die today or my daughter dies. If we die because God is exposing the truth, so be it. But my blood will not go scot-free,” she added.

The First Lady passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024. The resurfaced clip, widely shared across social media platforms, led to widespread reactions and speculation.

Responding to the incident, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah has released a statement condemning what he described as an attempt to politicize a private family tragedy.

In the statement titled “Government Will Not Be Distracted by Falsehood and Malicious Propaganda,” the government described the viral footage as a moment of emotional distress, taken out of context and weaponized for political purposes.

“The Government of Akwa Ibom State has observed with concern the circulation of a video on social media, and the calculated attempts by detractors and self-styled ‘pastorpreneurs’ to exploit a deeply emotional family moment for political mischief,” the statement read.

According to the release, the video was recorded shortly after the death of the First Lady and reflects the emotional outburst of a grieving daughter who had been misled by external influences.

“It is disheartening that a private and traumatic moment involving a grieving young girl is now being maliciously weaponized… The public is reminded that at no point in the said video did the child accuse the Governor of causing her mother’s death, as falsely portrayed by mischief makers,” the statement noted.

The government further alleged that the young girl had been influenced by “false prophets” and was seeking attention and reassurance from her father in a time of intense grief.

The statement also reiterated Governor Umo Eno’s remark, where he addressed the controversy during a media interaction on May 31, 2025.

“My family is intact, and you can see all of them here, including Jane. That event happened immediately after my wife’s death last year. Why is it resurfacing now, on the eve of our second anniversary, when we are celebrating the milestones we have achieved? People must understand the psychological toll such a loss can take on children. I appeal to all to allow my wife’s peaceful soul to rest. Let us not revive sorrow for political amusement,” the statement quoted the governor.

The government expressed disappointment at those allegedly behind the viral circulation, accusing them of being unsettled by the administration’s achievements and seeking to distract from ongoing development efforts under the ARISE Agenda.

“His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D, is not only the Governor of Akwa Ibom State but also an ordained pastor, a humane and compassionate leader, whose legendary love and care for the people continue to define and inspire his people-centered approach to governance,” the statement added.
