JUST IN: Amnesty International asks Tinubu’s govt to release detained hunger protesters

Amnesty International has once again urged the Nigerian authorities to release all individuals detained for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests, which took place from August 1 to August 10.

The human rights organization criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what it called “reckless” efforts to charge protesters with treason.

In a statement shared on Twitter, Amnesty International condemned the charges, labelling them as “absurd” and a clear attempt to stifle dissent.

The protests, which were aimed at drawing attention to widespread poverty and governance failures, have resulted in the arrest and detention of several participants.

“President Bola Tinubu’s reckless attempts to charge those who protested against widespread poverty with ‘treason’ is beyond absurd,” Amnesty International tweeted.

The protests, part of a movement to demand better governance and address issues such as poverty, unemployment, and corruption, have drawn widespread support from various civil society groups.

Amnesty International has repeatedly called on the government to respect the rights of citizens to peacefully protest and to immediately release those unlawfully detained.
