The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Barr. Tanimu Turaki, factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for calling on foreign powers to intervene in Nigeria’s political crisis.

The party described Turaki’s comments as “reckless and unpatriotic”.

Turaki had urged external actors to intervene in Nigeria to stop what he called “Christian genocide” and protect the country’s democracy.

The APC said Turaki, who was declared chairman by a faction of the PDP 72 hours ago, appeared “desperate” and “incoherent” in his handling of the party’s internal crisis.

The party said Nigerians expected Turaki to initiate peace efforts within the PDP rather than seeking foreign intervention.

The APC said calling for foreign invasion amounted to a threat to national security and an admission that the PDP could no longer manage its internal contradictions.

The ruling party said such a call never happened during the PDP’s 16-year rule despite intense political rivalry at the time.

The APC urged the international community to disregard Turaki’s comments, calling it a distraction from the opposition party’s “disintegration and failure of internal democracy”.
