Canada has joined the United States in raising alarm over what lawmakers describe as an ongoing attack against Christians in Nigeria.
The development followed a strong statement made in the Canadian Parliament, calling global attention to rising killings and targeted violence in the country.
The issue was brought forward by Andrew Scheer, a Member of Parliament and leader in the Conservative Party.
He warned that the situation has reached a critical level and accused extremist groups of carrying out systematic attacks on Christian communities.
During his address, he said Nigeria has witnessed mass killings, mass displacement, and destruction of places of worship.
He stressed that silence from the international community is worsening the crisis.
Scheer began by drawing attention to the scale of violence, saying,
“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to bring attention to the tragedy Christians in Nigeria are experiencing.”
He reminded Parliament that the crisis has lingered for years, stressing that extremist groups are behind much of the violence.
According to him, Boko Haram remains one of the key forces attacking Christian communities. He emphasized their mission to wipe out the faith, stating that the group has targeted believers and villages without mercy.
He referenced past atrocities to remind lawmakers of the group’s brutality:
“The deadly terrorist organization Boko Haram is trying to eliminate the Christian faith from Nigeria. This is the same terrorist group that kidnapped dozens of young schoolgirls and burned innocent civilians alive in cages.”
Scheer then spoke about the humanitarian disaster unfolding in affected regions.
He highlighted mass displacement across northern and central Nigeria, noting that millions have been forced from their homes, churches and communities.
“According to reports, over 3.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes. Three churches are destroyed every single day.”
The former house leader continued, explaining that Christian worship has become dangerous as many can no longer gather publicly without fear of attack.
Believers now meet secretly in devastated areas and burnt church buildings.
He added, “7,000 Christians were massacred this year alone, and the faithful must now meet in secret or in burnt-out sanctuaries.”
Scheer also expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of international attention.
He criticized global media and political leaders for failing to highlight the crisis or demand accountability.
He said,
“Sadly, the world is turning a blind eye to the plight of Christians in Nigeria. There are no embedded journalists covering the violence. There are not daily updates. Politicians around the world are not asked questions about how they will respond.”
The Canadian MP urged world leaders to act, insisting that global silence is helping fuel the violence.
He stressed the need for humanitarian support, public awareness and international pressure on authorities to protect vulnerable communities.
“We cannot ignore this violence and tragic loss of life. We must speak out and shine a light on what’s happening so that people can donate to relief efforts and provide support to those displaced by violence.”
Scheer ended on a note of solidarity and faith.
He encouraged Christians in Nigeria to remain resilient despite the suffering, promising that they would not be forgotten.
NOW THAT PEOPLE MATTER ARE TALKING LET’S SEE WHAT BECOMES OF THE GOVERNMENT
I can’t believe that even yoruba Christians are denying d very glaring Cristian massacres that has been taking place in d North just bcos their tribal person is in power. If it was Buhari time, wld they deny it. We have been seeing hundreds buried, churches burnt. How many mosques are burnt. D people that kill some moslems in d core North are bandits n kidnappers which is for economic reasons. But d ones in d middle belt n some core North is targeted at Christians. Were they wld ask u to either become a moslems or u die. This things are not hidden. Of all d internally displayed people’s camp, how many are peopled by moslems? None
I don’t want you to go far, what of the one that happened 2022 at St Francis Catholic church in OWO town in Ondo state more than 40 people were killed both adults and children inside the church during Sunday service.
Hallelujah!!!!
Iam surprised when I haer some clergy men saying that is untrue about the killing of Christians in Nigeria, it’s actually true they don’t want to say it. Christians are being murdered In cool blood and nothing is being done about it, the American president is correct.
Don’t be surprised Emma that how they are
It’s now high time for the world at large to see what we Christians are facing in Nigeria please we need your support these have to end
Go to places like benue plateau and taraba and other North Central states and see how Christians are being killed on a daily, I read it in the news some one was saying that the Muslims wants to build a caliphate, my question is this, most they eliminate Christians to be able to build a caliphate.
How can a religion of peace say that a none believer should be killed accept if you want to become a Muslim, in my opinion I think the quran is responsible for all this behaviours, Christianity teaches love and how to accommodate our enemies. I will continue to be a Christian because of its teachings
It’s becoming louder. Nigeria government needs to wake up to it’s constitutional responsibilities. Security of human lives and properties is paramount. Any government that is not doing this is a failure. Maybe it will take external pressures to do the needful. Since Nigeria politicians are only interested in their personal interests.
Obviously, Nigeria needs coordinated foreign direct intervention to solve the current security troubles. The armed forces are clearly unable to cope. The insurgents have better supply of funds and ammunition than our military. Imagine bandits using drones, high technology. The bandits sponsors are well known public figures that the Government dare not touch. This is why,if President Tinubu does not take advantage of impending US intervention, he and his government will be disgraced shortly. Many foreign powers will quickly back the US.They have the details. The sophisticated weapons with the bandits, are they not from…? How come Bella Turji is operating untouchable? You think people don’t know his master sponsoring him?.
On the matter of the killing of the Christians, the government is hiding two faces in a chasm. Over the years, this is undeniable and the date devil Boko Haram have been given free hand in guise to operate to wipe out Christian faith from Nigeria. The God of heaven and earth will not permit this. Make sure if Nigerian government failed to do the needful, God will raise up salvation from another area.
This was wake up call for our Nigeria leaders from there slumber. Truthly they knew what they are doing, they just ignore the issues on ground for their own selfish interes!
Thank God President Trump gave them the warning, how i wish the US troops was deploy to Nigeria. Shame to our leaders.
Iam from Gwer-West. L. G. A. Benue State. We have been displaced by the well armed fulani herds men for years now. Imagine my first sons 10, 8&3 years respectively have not known road to their village. To interest you to know my is from Enugu state and my children need to understand the Benue culture and the tiv language but they have been denied all of these because of the fulanis herdmen which all of them are Islam. We ran out of village presently I settled in Jos suffering every day of what my family will eat. My mother is in one upe primary school now called IDPS camps with little provision of food. My self iam a farmer I really need to go back to my village and my home town. Things are not easy in the city. So American intervention would be highly appreciated we suffered alot. Only the blood sucker’s that would not want the terrorists to be eliminated.
