JUST IN: Catholic Priest shot by Fulani Herdsmen in Benue [PHOTOS]

Tension has gripped parts of Benue State following the shooting of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Solomon Atongo, and the abduction of two other persons by suspected herdsmen along the increasingly dangerous Makurdi-Naka road.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening as Fr. Atongo, who is the priest in charge of St. John’s Quasi Parish in Jimba, was returning from Naka, the administrative headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses say the priest was ambushed by gunmen who opened fire on his vehicle. Fr. Atongo was hit and left for dead, while the two other passengers traveling with him were seized and taken to an unknown location.

Confirming the attack, Rev. Fr. Joseph Beba, Chairman of the Diocesan Priests Association, described the situation as heartbreaking. He disclosed that Fr. Atongo survived the gunshots and was rushed to a hospital where he remains in critical condition.

“This is a sad time for all of us. We are praying for his recovery and for the safe return of those who were taken,” Fr. Beba said.

The Makurdi-Naka road has become a hotspot for kidnappings and armed attacks over the past two years, with several lives lost and many others missing. Travelers have repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of security along the stretch, which connects several communities in the state.

The identities of the abducted persons have not been made public yet, and no group has claimed responsibility or made any demands.
