JUST IN: Details emerge from NNPP’s emergency closed-door meeting in Lagos

The National Working Committee of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) held an emergency meeting on Thursday in Lagos, bringing together the party’s national executives from across the country.

The closed-door meeting, which was not open to journalists, saw the attendance of key party leaders, including Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, National Chairman Dr. Agbo Major, and Secretary-General Dr. Oginni Olaposi. The session began at 10:00 a.m. and concluded around 3:00 p.m.

Speaking to journalists at his office at the NAGAFF Headquarters in Apapa after the meeting, Aniebonam, who is also the NNPP founder, said the executives gathered to discuss urgent matters affecting the party nationwide.

“At the top of the agenda was INEC’s delay in uploading the new national executives of the party, which is preventing us from participating actively in elections nationwide,” Aniebonam said.

He added, “We have written many times to the commission and even demanded that elections be stopped until the NNPP issue is resolved to avoid litigations that may affect elections in Nigeria.

INEC’s delay is a constitutional abuse of our rights as Nigerians to participate in elections. Despite the advice and directives of the Abia and Federal Capital Territory High Courts, INEC remains adamant.”

Aniebonam insisted that INEC must halt all electoral activities nationwide until the correct NNPP logo is reflected and the party under its new leadership is fully recognised.

Other issues discussed included the alleged usurpation of the NNPP name by expelled members and approaches from presidential aspirants seeking the party’s platform for the 2027 elections.

On whether the NNPP will present its own presidential candidate or work in alliance with other parties, Aniebonam said the party intends to field its own candidate but is open to collaboration with like-minded parties.

“We maintain that our ticket will not be given out to a lone aspirant as it was in 2023. The NNPP will be open to as many aspirants as wish to contest on its platform.

All aspirants will undergo mandatory primaries and will be chosen by party members. There will be no selective choice by the leadership,” he said.

Aniebonam also announced plans for a nationwide membership drive, which the party intends to begin soon.
