JUST IN: Edo House of Assembly deputy speaker resigns, gives reasons

Maria Oligbi-Edeko, the Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly has resigned from her position.
Oligbi-Edeko, who represents Esan North-East II of Edo State announced her resignation on the floor of the plenary on Monday, May 19.
In a letter read to the members of the House during the plenary, the former deputy speaker said her resignation aligns with her resolve to make room for equity, justice and fairness to all constituencies represented at the Assembly.
Oligbi-Edeko resignation follows the defection of some lawmakers who are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The defection of these party members who had joined the ruling All Progressives Congress has affected the minority status of the party
Oligbi-Edeko also commended the members of the House for the opportunity granted to her to serve the Assembly, her constituency and the people of Edo State.
Following her resignation, the House immediately elected Osamwonyi Atu as the new deputy speaker for the Edo State Assembly
Also commending the former deputy speaker for service, the Majority Leader of the House, Jonathan Aigbokhan, moved a motion for all benefits enjoyed by the former speaker transferred to Atu who represents Orhionmwon East under the platform of the APC.
