The Federal Government, through the Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA), has issued a warning regarding the imminent arrival of strong winds in several states neighbouring the Federal Capital Territory.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the alert comes after an impact-based weather forecast conducted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
According to a statement released on Wednesday and signed by FEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, the affected states are Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna, which are in close proximity to the Federal Capital Territory. Additionally, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno, and Adamawa states are expected to experience strong winds as well. The forecast highlights a moderate risk of hazards due to the forceful winds.
The agency emphasises that these strong winds may lead to displacements of individuals and isolated instances of damage to vulnerable structures.
“States contiguous to the Federal Capital Territory, like Nasarawa, Niger and Kaduna are to experience very strong winds within the next three days. Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno and Adamawa states will also experience strong winds. The forecast warns that moderate risk hazards may occur due to the strong winds,” the statement read.
“Mindful of the fact that climatic changes in some of these states, particularly Nasarawa, may impact the Federal Capital Territory, FEMA is closely monitoring the situation,” it added.
In response to the forecast, FEMA’s Director General, Dr Abbas Idriss, has placed the agency’s Search and Rescue teams on high alert. He urges residents to exercise caution during heavy rainfall and avoid driving through waterlogged areas. Dr Idriss also appeals to the public to clear blocked drains and refrain from constructing buildings near water channels.
He assures residents of FEMA’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property. In case of emergencies, the agency encourages the use of the toll-free number 112.
It is a serious warning that should be heeded. Man doesn’t have a clue on how to solve these natural phenomenas. But God’s Kingdom can and an example of such was displayed by Jesus Christ while on earth. There was a day he was tired and so was sleeping in the boat. Suddenly the wind changed its intensity and became so serious that the boat was about to be sunk. Peter, John, James, Andrew are experienced fishermen and so know something about how to pull a boat to safety when the river became rough. But this was different. Eventually they were forced to go wake Jesus Christ. When he woke up and realized What was about to happen, he simply said “hush, be quiet.” It stopped and became calm. The apostles were flabbergasted and looked at Jesus Christ with awe. Strong and destruction winds will not be in God’s Kingdom. Our only hope for a better life is God’s Kingdom.
