The Federal Government on Tuesday confirmed that six passengers sustained injuries after a Kaduna-bound train derailed along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) disclosed that the incident occurred at about 11:09 a.m. at Kilometre 49, between Kubwa Station and Asham Station. The bureau said no fatalities were recorded.
In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the NSIB announced that a go-team of investigators had been deployed to the site to collect evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and begin a probe into the circumstances surrounding the derailment.
“Current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, and no recorded fatalities. A go-team has been deployed to the site to gather evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and commence an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident,” the statement read.
Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh, said that the bureau’s priority was to uncover the root cause of the derailment and issue safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence.
“We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation,” he said.
The derailment occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja for Kaduna.
