JUST IN: FG Introduces N1,000 Annual Fee for Motorists’ Proof of Ownership

The Federal Government has introduced a new initiative requiring all motorists to pay an annual fee of N1,000 for the Proof of Ownership Certificate (POC) verification.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the move aims to streamline and strengthen vehicle ownership verification.

Starting from July 2023, the collection of this fee will be initiated by the Lagos State government.

During a joint press conference in Ikeja, Lagos, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola announced the implementation of the initiative.

Its purpose is to ensure compliance with the legal requirement outlined in the National Road Traffic Regulation 2012, as amended, No. 101, Vol. 99, Section 73-(1), which states that “There shall be Proof of Ownership Certificate for all registered Vehicles.” Additionally, Section 73-(1-6) mandates the establishment and maintenance of a Central Database for Vehicles and drivers across the federation.

Toriola emphasised that the decision aims to track the real-time status and maintain the integrity of all vehicles registered on the National Vehicle and Identification Scheme (NVIS) database.

“To this end, the Federal Government has introduced the issuance of annual Proof of Ownership Certificate for all registered vehicles.

“This certificate will serve as official documentation of a vehicle’s legal owners upon successful completion of the necessary requirements and procedures.

“The POC will contain vital information including the vehicle’s registration details, such as, license number plate, model, year of manufacture in addition to owner’s name and address.

“Having critically reviewed the challenges encountered in ensuring promotion of Safety and Security of lives and property through the issuance of POC nationally and especially in our Dear State, the Joint Tax Board in its communiqué issued at the end of the emergency meeting held on 9th May 2023 adopted and made a resolution that proof of ownership certificate (PoC) be issued to motorists on an annual basis nationwide,” he said.

  1. I warned nigerians before 2023 presidential election it seems they were all deaf, tinubu will teach all of us a lesson of unnecessary taxation

  2. This is a totally unnecessary fee. It’s necessary only when there is change of ownership, since every vehicle owner already has one. To be paying for annual renewal is unnecessary financial burden, and I am sure it will not be N1000 as stated. When it gets to the state now it may be N2000 or more. This is coming after all vehicle papers renewal fees has been increased. Imagine third party insurance alone has been increased from N5000 to N15000.

  3. So what is the functions of vehicle licence which is renewed annually and paid for? The government keeps seeking how to introduce all manner of fees and levies. What a hell is this!!!

  4. We are oppressing our self in this country that is what tinubu will be r ewarding to the masses and is the one that give that useless Fulani man buhari regard & moral and Allah will punish all of their generations amen and fuel again is costs and masses are sufferings Allah will catch all of them

  5. By the time FG, state governments and LGs tax Nigerians on millions of different items, we won’t have any take-home pay for ourselves and families. Nigerians are being taxed to death while the executive, NA, top government officials CONTINUE to rip us off. This vehicle registration renewal tax is absolute rubbish for whatever reasons it’s for.
