JUST IN: FG warns journalists against giving publicity to bandits, terrorists

Minister of information and orientation, Mohammed Idris, has warned media professionals to stop granting undue publicity to terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements threatening Nigeria’s peace and security.

Idris made the call on Wednesday while speaking at the seventh edition of the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing Series held at the National Press Centre in Abuja.

He said the media have a vital role to play in shaping public perception and supporting national security efforts.

His words: “The media, as gatekeepers and partners in nation-building, have a crucial role to play in supporting our military’s morale by highlighting their successes and sacrifices.

“We must deny these groups the undue publicity they crave. We must take them off the front pages and accurately report them as the criminals they are, without glorifying their acts or giving credence to their false narratives.”

He said terrorist and criminal groups often exploit media coverage and social media to spread fear, propagate disinformation, and recruit new followers.

In that context, he appealed to journalists and editors to report responsibly and patriotically by avoiding sensational headlines and not becoming unwitting amplifiers of terror propaganda.

“These are not freedom fighters; they are murderers, kidnappers, and destroyers, and they must be presented as such,” he said.

Idris said the warning aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially the pillar focused on strengthening national security for peace and prosperity.

He noted that the federal government is investing in military capacity through modern equipment, improved intelligence, and strategic partnerships.

The minister said the Ministerial Press Briefing Series, an initiative of his ministry, serves as a platform for ministers to update Nigerians on key achievements, ongoing projects, and policy directions.

“Through this interactive platform, which is being broadcast live on national television stations and streamed across social media platforms, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to transparency, accountability, and public engagement,” he said.

He commended the media for their support of the briefing series and their broader role in promoting public awareness of government policies.
