JUST IN: Fire razes popular Abuja market [PHOTOS]

Karimo market in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been razed by an early morning fire, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.

Although the actual cause of the inferno remains unknown, some traders said it started from a shop before spreading to the others.

This newspaper understands that it is the fourth time Karimo market will be engulfed by fire.

As of the time of publishing this report on Thursday morning, the traders were seen counting their losses and salvaging what was left of their goods. It is believed that goods worth millions of naira were destroyed by the fire.

Media reports showed that between 2019 and 2021, Nigeria experienced severe fire incidents, leading to 79 deaths out of 68 fires recorded in 18 months.

Also, statistics from the Federal Fire Service (FFS) indicates that between 2020 and 2021, a total of 4,541 calls were made to the agency nationwide and 378 rescue emergencies were recorded.
