Aliyu Usman Haruna, the caretaker chairman of Gombe Local Government Council, passed away on Tuesday in Egypt at the age of 58.
Haruna, fondly known as Ali Ashaka, was receiving treatment at an Egyptian hospital at the time of his demise.
Ashaka served as the state chairman of the Association of Local Government Areas of Nigeria (ALGON). He was first elected chairman of Gombe LGA in December 2020 and continued in that role until the end of his tenure in 2022. Following the conclusion of his elected term, he was appointed as one of 11 caretaker chairmen tasked with overseeing their respective local councils.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya expressed profound sadness upon receiving the news of Ashaka’s passing, describing it as a monumental loss for the deceased’s family, the state, and the nation at large. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor lauded Ashaka as a trusted confidant, a man of unwavering honesty, and a loyal companion.
“Late Aliyu Haruna will be remembered as a humble, humane, and remarkable politician and leader who dedicated his life to serving the state in various capacities,” the statement read. “His indelible mark on the lives of many will forever be cherished.”
