Gunmen have launched a deadly attack on the peaceful community of Kerang in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in the reported deaths of at least seven individuals.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this incident took place despite the imposition of a 24-hour curfew by the government in the Local Government Area, following previous attacks by armed assailants that claimed numerous lives in nearby communities just last week.
Joseph Kabir, a resident of Kerang community, verified the details of the recent assault during an interview in Jos on Tuesday.
He revealed that one of the victims was a man, killed alongside his wife.
He also noted that the victims were laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony on Tuesday morning.
The resident said, “I can confirm to you that five people, including a man and his wife, were killed by terrorists between 5:00 and 8:00 pm on June 26, 2023 in Sohon Kerang Community of Kerang District Mangu Local Government.
“We thought that with the declaration of curfew by the government, security agents would be able to stop the terrorists from killing innocent residents.
“But the gunmen came to the community, which is behind the SWAN Water Company Ltd, located at Kerang community by 5:00 pm, firing gunshots which led to the killing of the victims.
“They escaped into the bush after carrying out their evil acts . It was this morning that the corpses of the victims were discovered by residents who have been thrown into mourning. The victims were given mass burial this morning June 27, 2023.”
This newspaper learnt that at the time of reporting, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, had not issued a public statement regarding the incident.
