JUST IN: House of Reps Speaker, Abbas Swears in Three New Members

The Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday swore in three new members following their victory in the August 16, 2025 bye-elections.

The lawmakers are among five elected to fill vacant seats caused by the deaths of four members and the selection of Dennis Idahosa as running mate to Senator Monday Okpebholo in the 2024 Edo governorship election.

The Green Chamber had lost Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Isa Dogonyaro (Jigawa), and Olaide Akinremi (Oyo) in 2024 due to illness, while Oriyomi Onanuga passed away in 2025.

In August, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted bye-elections in the affected states to fill the vacancies. The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of the five seats, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) securing one.

The lawmakers sworn in on Tuesday are: Omosede Igbinedion (Ovia South/Ovia West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency, Edo State), Joseph Bagudu (Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State), Mukhtar Rabiu (Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State).

No explanation was provided for the absence of Elegbeji Ayola (Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State) and Oyekunle Sunday (Ibadan North Federal Constituency).

Of the five newly elected members, Oyekunle Sunday is the only PDP representative.
