Bashir Ahmed, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has announced that he will not be watching the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers match of the Super Eagles against Rwanda later today.
Bashir said the decision was in respect to the devastating flood that has hit Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the flood, as a result of the collapse of water channels at the Alau Dam, displaced many residents of Maiduguri.
Residential quarters, including parts of the Shehu of Borno Palace, Maiduguri Central Market, and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, have been submerged.
Roads and bridges have also been submerged resulting in the inaccessibility of many areas.
According to reports, GRA, Maiduguri Zoo, College of Nursing, College of Agriculture, and School of Health Technology, among others, are areas also badly hit by the flood.
Taking to his X handle on Tuesday, Bashir who wished the team well, also called on the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to make arrangements for the players to wear black armbands.
This, he said, is to show solidarity with the people of Borno State, adding that the scale of the tragedy is something Nigeria has never experienced before.
He wrote, “With respect to the devastating floods in Maiduguri, I will not be watching the @NGSuperEagles’ match this afternoon against Rwanda.
“I wish them the best and I hope the @theNFF has made arrangements for the players to wear black armbands in solidarity with the good people of Borno. The scale of today’s tragedy is something Nigeria has never experienced before.”
