JUST IN: IGP Egbetokun charges Sowore with false publication, forgery

IGP Kayode Egbetokun has filed a three-count charge against Omoyele Sowore, a politician and publisher of Sahara Reporters, over alleged false publication and forgery.

The charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/374/2025, was filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The IGP accused Sowore of conspiring with his media platform to forge a police wireless message purportedly signed by the principal staff officer to the IGP.

The first count stated that Sowore and Sahara Reporters “did conspire between yourselves to commit a felony to wit forgery and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 1 (2) (C) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.”

The second count alleged that they forged a police wireless message and thereby committed an offence punishable under the same section of the Act.

The third count alleged that Sowore “did intentionally post a fake police signal and other inciting materials on your Facebook page with the intention to incite members of the force and the general public to embark on a mutiny against the federal government of Nigeria, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 114 of the Penal Code Law.”

The defendants were scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday, but the case stalled as the prosecution could not serve Sahara Reporters, listed as the second defendant.

Wisdom Madaki, the prosecuting lawyer, told the court that efforts were ongoing to serve the media platform through substituted means by newspaper publication.

Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the case till September 15 for arraignment.
