
On Thursday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented certificates of return to the winners of the August 16, by-elections across six states of the country.
The presentation of the certificates, the commission said follows the conclusion of the elections which took place in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, Oyo and Anambra States.
The commission also said that the presentation of the certificates of return is in line with the provision of Section 71(1) of the Electoral Act.
In a post made on X, INEC said according to the Act, sealed Certificates of Return in a prescribed form shall be issued within 14 days to every candidate returned by the Returning Officer.
“In line with this provision, the National Commissioner overseeing each relevant geopolitical zone today presented Certificates of Return to seven (7) candidates who emerged victorious in the elections,” the commission noted.
The certificates were issued to two winners of the two senatorial districts elections in Anambra South and Edo Central; and winners of five federal constituencies polls in Edo, Jigawa, Ogun, Oyo and Kaduna.
