The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended Nura Ali, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Sokoto State.
The suspension was announced in a letter signed by INEC’s Secretary, Rose Orlaran-Anthony, on Monday addressed to both the REC and the Administrative Secretary in the state.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the suspension is with immediate effect.
While the reason for the suspension was not stated, this newspaper learned that it is due to the recent allegations of irregularities in the February 25 election in Sokoto State.
The Administrative Secretary, Hajiya Aliyu Kangiwa, has been instructed to take full charge of INEC in Sokoto State.
This newspaper recalled that the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, recently in a meeting with states REC as part of the preparation for the forthcoming governorship elections vowed to deal with anyone, either staff or ad-hoc staff of the commission who contributed to the shortcomings of the presidential election.
