JUST IN: ISWAP abducts 4, move them to notorious Timbuktu area

Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have abducted at least four persons on Thursday night in northeast Nigeria.

POLITICS NIGERIA understands that the terrorists were last seen around Kayi Buji at about 11pm last night. They then moved with their victims to Timbuktu triangle general area, a notorious insurgents region straddling Borno and Yobe States.

ISWAP, which split from Boko Haram in 2016, maintains camps on islands in Lake Chad – where Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad meet – and the area is known to be the group’s bastion.

At least 36,000 people have been killed in the armed conflict since 2009 and violence has spread into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting the formation of a regional military coalition.
