Military airstrikes over the weekend neutralised a leader of ISWAP, Fiya Ba Yuram, and scores of other terrorists in Sambisa forest, Borno State.
POLITICS NIGERIA learned that similar airstrikes were launched in Tunbun Madayi town near Lake Chad as outlaws’ activities were observed in the area used as training camp.
Fiya Yuram took over the leadership of ISWAP following the killing of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, in May 2021.
The terrorists were reportedly gathering for an undisclosed mission when security operatives struck.
Nigeria’s military is battling to end a 13-year conflict spearheaded by armed groups like Boko Haram and its faction, ISWAP, in the country’s northeast. It has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced 2.2 million more.
Boko Haram seized Bama in 2014 when they took over swaths of territory in northern Borno and declared a so-called caliphate.
In March 2015, Nigerian troops aided by Chadian soldiers clawed back most of the territory after months-long intensive ground and aerial operations. The operations have not ceased.
