The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a directive for stricter traffic enforcement across the country following the devastating petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State on January 18, 2025.
The explosion, which occurred when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire, claimed the lives of over 73 people, injured many others, and caused significant damage to nearby shops and property.
In response to the tragedy, the IGP instructed all State Commissioners of Police to enhance the capabilities of their Motor Traffic Divisions and ensure strict compliance with safety protocols on highways.
This was contained in a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Sunday, January 19.
“The IGP further charged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and abide by the traffic rules in order to prevent any tragedies.
“The IGP, while praying for the souls of the departed, therefore calls on all stakeholders, including transport operators and the general public, to prioritize safety and responsibility in their operations and actions, ensuring that such ugly incidents do not occur in the future,” part of the statement read.
