Kenneth Okonkwo, a lawyer and Nollywood actor has reacted to the rumoured possibility of a political coalition between Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (PDP).
Speaking on Arise Television on Monday, May 19, Okonkwo, who is also a member of the Labour Party said that whatever Obi and Atiku are planning for ahead of the 2027 general election should be left for them to decide.
Okonkwo said candidates should be allowed the opportunity and platforms to face the tough decisions by the people they intend to govern at the polls.
He said, “In politics, candidates have the choice to get into their own discussions and negotiations. But for me, my own take is that whoever believes that he is qualified to be president should submit himself to a free and fair primary election.”
He also said that it is important that all aspirants who are interested in vying for the position of president of the country be allowed to pass through the hurdle of his or her party’s primary election.
According to Okonkwo, primary elections are a litmus test for every politician’s popularity before facing the general decision of the people.
He said, “That toughness that we are going to face in the primary will determine the person that has the capacity to face the tough challenge in the general election. I am not in the league of people trying to persuade anybody to step down for anybody. That should be the decision of the candidate himself.
“This is because I would not want anybody to come out and say, ‘I am leaving this coalition or this party because I was pressured to give up my ambition.
“So, whatever Atiku and Obi are discussing should be left for them but for me, whoever wants to contest the presidency should submit himself and contest for the presidency and let the people decide,” Okonkwo said.
