Lagos Commissioner resigns over collapsed buildings

Idris Salako, the Lagos Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, has resigned from office, reportedly due to the incessant incidents of building collapse in the state.

According to a statement sent to POLITICS NIGERIA on Monday afternoon by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has accepted Salako’s resignation.

Under the outgoing Commissioner, a 21-storey building in Ikoyi collapsed in 2021, killing about 50 people. Several other structures have also caved in.

The last was the 7-storey collapsed building on Sunday, with at least four persons confirmed dead already.

It is being alleged that Salako was indicted by the committee set up by the Lagos State Government to look into the reason for the collapse of 21-storey building in Ikoyi last year. However, this newspaper cannot independently verify this claim.

“This is a prelude to the restructuring of the Ministry and its agencies.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu thanks the Commissioner for his services to the state and wishes him success in his future endeavours.

“The Governor warns all players in the sector to respect the law or face the consequences of any indiscretion, no matter who the perpetrators are,” the government’s statement reads in part.
