JUST IN: NASS Passes Bill to Punish Sexual Offenders in Tertiary Institutions

The National Assembly went hard on sex offenders in tertiary institutions across the country as they passed a decisive bill to punish them.

The bill calls for comprehensive provisions for the prohibition and punishment of sexual harassment by educators in all higher institutions in Nigeria.

Politics Nigeria recalls that the Senate passed the said bill in 2020 and the House of Representatives passed theirs but with different provisions of punishment for the offenders.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, made it known that both chambers’ conference committees harmonised the different positions and he presented the report at the plenary.

The proposed legislative bill is meant to criminalise sexual harassment by academic members against students in tertiary institutions.

The legislature also passed a bill to make compulsory, the inclusion of preventive measures at averting sexual and gender-based violence in the curriculum of all levels of secondary education in the country.
