JUST IN: Niger state govt suspends Sallah festivities over Mokwa flood

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has directed that the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations across all Emirates in the state be observed in a low-key manner.

This directive, announced by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, includes the suspension of traditional Sallah festivities such as Hawan Bariki, Durbar, and other elaborate gatherings.

According to the SSG, the decision follows the devastating flood disaster that recently struck Mokwa and its surrounding communities, claiming multiple lives and leaving widespread destruction of homes and livelihoods.

Usman said: “This is one of the worst flood incidents the state has seen in decades.

“The loss of life and property has been enormous, and the governor believes it is only fitting to use this Sallah period for mourning, prayer, and reflection.”

He further noted that all traditional leaders and Emirate Councils have been formally informed of the governor’s directive and are expected to comply fully.

Governor Bago, who has expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families, has also directed emergency agencies to intensify relief efforts and ensure that displaced persons are supported during this difficult time.

The state government urged citizens to commemorate the Eid peacefully and to remember the affected families in their prayers.
