JUST IN: Nigeria Bar Association directs branches to monitor trials of hunger protesters

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has taken decisive action in response to concerns surrounding the trials of #EndBadGovernance protesters, directing its branches to closely monitor these legal proceedings.

To further support the protesters, the NBA has also launched a Pro Bono support initiative aimed at ensuring that those without legal representation receive the necessary counsel.

Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, the President of the NBA, made this announcement in a statement released on Wednesday.

He revealed that the NBA’s Citizens’ Liberties Committee (NBA-CLC) has been specifically tasked with collaborating with the Chairmen and Human Rights Committees of NBA branches in regions where protesters are being prosecuted.

“The Nigerian Bar Association legal teams are in courts and will continue to monitor proceedings to ensure that the rule of law is upheld, the human rights of defendants are protected, and justice is served,” the NBA stated.

The initiative comes in response to growing concerns from human rights groups and legal practitioners about the fairness and transparency of the ongoing trials.

The NBA’s involvement is expected to provide critical legal support, ensuring that the rights of the protesters are fully protected throughout the judicial process.

“I have directed the branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to monitor the trials of the #EndBadGovernance protesters. Additionally, I have launched a Pro Bono support initiative for protesters who lack legal representation,” Osigwe stated.
