JUST IN: Nigeria Loses Joint Bid to Host AFCON 2027

Nigeria has lost its joint bid with the Benin Republic to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, with Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania being named joint hosts of the tournament.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the announcement was made on Wednesday by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following a vote by its Executive Committee in Cairo, Egypt.

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, had arrived in Cairo on Tuesday with representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to bid for the hosting rights. However, Nigeria’s bid was unsuccessful, with the joint bid from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania receiving the most votes.

Nigeria’s only hosting of the AFCON was in 1980 when the Super Eagles won the tournament.
