JUST IN: Nigerian govt rakes in N2.4 billion from marriages in 2024

The Federal Government of Nigeria raked in approximately N2.4 billion from marriage contracts via its marriage registry in 2024.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a media chat.

According to the minister, over N3.2 billion was generated from expatriate quota applications, marking a 150% increase in overall revenue.

The Ministry of Interior’s marriage registry has become a substantial source of income. In 2023, the Ministry surpassed its projected revenue from marriage contracts, collecting N892.774 million as of October 31, 2023, exceeding the N380 million target by over N500 million.

The issuance of expatriate quotas also contributed significantly to the Ministry’s revenue. In 2023, the Ministry generated N1.195 billion from expatriate quota permits, surpassing the N600 million target by approximately N600 million.
