JUST IN: Peter Obi mourns victims of Suleja petrol tanker explosion

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic petrol tanker explosion that claimed over 70 lives and left more than 50 injured along the Dikko-Maje Road in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State on Thursday.

In a statement on social media, Obi described the incident as “truly heartbreaking” and called for urgent action to prevent such disasters.

“These accidents, which have sadly become increasingly recurrent, highlight the urgent need for stricter safety measures to address the dangers of tanker explosions and similar incidents, which often result in colossal disasters,” he wrote.

The former Anambra State governor extended his condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the Government and people of Niger State.

“May God grant them, and all of us, the fortitude to bear this loss, eternal rest to the departed, and a swift recovery to the injured,” Obi said.

About 60 bodies have been recovered from the scene of the explosion, authorities said on Saturday.

The tragedy occurred when the fuel-laden tanker, belonging to HMY Oil and Gas, exploded.
