Akwa Ibom Accord Party sacks chairman, lists his ‘sins’

The Accord Party in Akwa Ibom state has sacked its chairman, Martins Udo Inyang, over alleged fraud and anti-party activities.

Obong Imeobong Udeng, the state secretary of the party, made this known during a press conference in Uyo at the weekend.

Udeng said that Inyang’s tenure was marked by irregularities which informed the poor performance of the party in the 2023 governorship election.

The ousted chairman’s sack came on the heels of a vote of no confidence made by stakeholders including members of the party’s State Working Committee (SWC), Director-General of Governorship Campaign, Aniekan Johnson, chapter chairmen from 31 council areas in the state and Ward Chairmen in 329 wards in the state.

Allegations against Inyang include embezzlement of N3.1m donated by the party governorship candidate for logistics in the last general election, inability to win election in his unit, ward, and local government area, as well as gross misconduct in protecting the party interest against the opposition.

The party secretary observed that stakeholders decided to relieve the state chairman of his position in order to rescue the party from total collapse after the poor performance in the last election.

Udeng said:

“He facilitated the defection of our members to other political parties and clandestinely positioned his church members to unseat other members in the Exco without the consent of the state working committee.

“Again Martins Udo Inyang craftily made his wife a candidate of our party in Akwa Ibom North West senatorial district for monetary gains.”

The party, therefore, appointed a seven-man Caretaker Committee to manage its affairs within six months.
