Protesters affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) have clashed with security operatives outside the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the protesters on Thursday were reportedly angry over the election of new zonal officers of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
They were stopped from gaining access to the secretariat by stern-looking policemen, which reportedly led to a shouting match.
The development is coming in the wake of the election of zonal officers of the NWC, which was unveiled by the National Secretary of the ruling party, Senator Ajibola Basiru.
Basiru noted that the election of new officers was in line with the mandate given to them by the National Executive Committee at the last meeting held at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja on August 3.
The move saw the outgoing National Deputy Chairman for North, Senator Abubakar Kyari, being replaced by Borno party chairman, Ali Dalori, while the founder of Sister-To-Sister Empowerment Worldwide, Dr. Mary Idele from Edo State was elected to occupy the office of the National Women Leader previously held by Dr. Betta Edu.
However, there is said to be a bone of contention with the announcement of Mary Alile Idele as National Women Leader (South South Zone), instead of Dr Stella Odey-Ekpo, the candidate of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Beta Edu.
The party also picked Duro Meseko (Kogi State) as the new Deputy National Publicity Secretary (North Central Zone) to replace Yakubu Ajaka, as allegedly recommended by James Faleke against the candidate recommended by Governor Bello.
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello had stormed the secretariat earlier in the day.
