Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the funeral of Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was killed in a plane crash last week, the Kremlin has said.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, on Tuesday said the president’s presence was “not envisaged” at the funeral, and that the arrangements were up to the family.
Recall that on Sunday, investigators revealed that genetic tests had confirmed that Prigozhin was among the 10 people killed in the crash.
The Kremlin has rejected as an “absolute lie” the suggestion by some Western politicians and commentators that Putin ordered Prigozhin to be killed in revenge.
The incident happened two months after Prigozhin and his hired guns launched a coup against Putin’s senior military leaders, seizing control of Rostov in the south and making their way into Moscow before turning around from the capital.
Prigozhin was the founder of the Wagner Group, a private military company that has been accused of carrying out operations in Syria, Libya, and Ukraine.
