JUST IN: CJN under fire over Supreme Court’s order on Naira notes

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Nigeria on Wednesday asked Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), to vacate the order suspending the February 10 deadline for the swap of old naira notes with new ones given by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that speaking during a news conference in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the coalition, Obed Okwukwe, said that Supreme Court lacks the jurisdiction to hear the case.

“We say it categorically that the Supreme Court does not have the jurisdiction to entertain that matter that has been presented before it by some state Attorney General. We the CSOs are rejecting it.

“It is a plot to open bank vaults to enable vote buyers and holders of illicit wealth to have cash to buy votes.

“We urge the CJN to hurriedly vacate the Ex-parte order in the overall interest of the Nigerian election,” Okwukwe said.

Furthermore, Okwukwe argued that the CBN policy has the backing of the Federal Government.

The apex court had on Wednesday morning in a lawsuit brought before it by the governments of Zamfara, Kogi and Kaduna States issued an interim injunction against the CBN and Federal Government,  allowing the old N200, N500 and N1000 to remain legal tender beyond February 10 deadline until the case is fully disposed.

  1. LET THE PRESIDENT USE HIS EXECUTIVE ORDER TO OVER RIDE THE SUPREME COURT. OR LET HIM WAIT TILL 2OTH OR 19TH FEBRRUARY BEFORE INVOKING THE IMMERGENCY POWER. BY THE GRACE OF GOD, EL RUFAI, GUNDUJE AND TINUBU WILL NOT USE OLD NOTE TO RIG THIS ELECTION. LET THEM TAKE THEIR MONIES TO THE BANK AS WE HAVE DONE. NOT TO LEAVE THEM IN THEIR HOUSES OR LET THEM SHARE THE MONIES TO THE MASSES SINCE THEY ARE MUCH. THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO BUY THIS ELECTION WITH MONEY.

    1. It’s a pity that there are still nigerians who think so irrational like this. Does is mean if truly there are people who have kept money at home to buy votes, there’s no any other way to deal with or stop them except by making the poor masses suffer hardship? This is of course not well thought out. Before implementing a certain policy, you ought to look at the possible gains and losses of it. You ought to look at how it affects the general public. You ought to have the right measures on ground to contain or address the possible consequence/(s). You can’t make over 90% of your citizens suffer because you want to deal with or stop certain group of less than 10% from having their way. There should be a better way of addressing this.

      1. God bless you Bro, there are some ingrate people in this country just because of their personal interest and their prefered candidate, don’t even care about their parents in the village.

      2. Sometimes in life bro, you need to suffer before you enjoy. Kaduna state governor and others are the enemies of this great country. May God put them to shame. Their evil plan will be expose. Evil leaders. I support the CBN, let fill the heart again but is for the main time. I love Nigeria my country. Oh God arise for Nigeria and defend us in your mercy

      3. Brother better check back and find out who is real irrational between you and him. Come to think of it among all the governors in Nigeria who has ever complained about all the mess happening in Nigeria all this while and why complaining now about old currencies dateline? Ok let me tell you even if the dateline will be extended to one year scarcity of notes will never end until they finish changing their old currencies stored in their houses so they are not fighting for you but themselves. But believe me if the dateline will be implemented within three days the masses will not longer be on the long queue any longer because the new currencies will be enough to reach every one with the new cashless policy already implemented. But provided that there is no dateline any new notes that come to commercial banks the political class who are also the elite will always have their ways to exchange them with their stored old notes in their houses. So we should be thankful to God for this opportunity to have a better Nigeria please let’s do this for our children and the subsequent generations please. By the what is money doing in the bank, what are the uses the banks.

      4. A big empty head, that’s what you are, You think CBN hasn’t injected enough new note in the bank market, it is Tinubu and his gang that is hording the money in order to frustrate the effort

      5. This policy kicked off over a hundred days ago. This is an APC administration failure to get things done properly. Kogi, Kebbi, and Kaduna states are all APC. What does that tell you?
Extend the deadline to May 29, and APC will still bundle it. Truth be told, are there any of their policies that have been efficiently implemented?
        School feeding..bungled.
        Cash transfer..bungled.
        Trader money…bungled.
        ASUU strike…bungled
        Fuel subsidy..bungled.
        The list is endless
The solution to all these failures. DO NOT VOTE FOR APC ON 25/02/2023.

    2. I concur the writer is absolutely right, let the Nigeria President do the right thing.
      May God bless Nigeria

  2. I have been young now I am 60+ this is not the first time Nigeria will change money and we know how seamlessly it was done then without hardship.
What’s the use of money changed but that is not in circulation for use ? A monetary change that turned poor workers to beggars overnight, they have money in the banks but not accessible for immediate or emergency use….in the name of what? The conditions of the poor majority should be uppermost.

    1. What will make you to beg? You can transfer money to buy whatever you want to buy! How much of the old notes are you still having outside bank that you can’t deposit before the deadline?

      1. You are talking as if you are not in this country.so after deposition of all what l have but l can’t withdraw what is the essence? And what about those who don’t have access to banks?

    2. Bro. there has been no change of Nigeria currency wothout to hardship. The last which was the introduction of 1000 Naira was not an exchange but addition of upgrade of currency.
Nothing is wrong economically when the cash is supplus and is retrived. However compounding the hardship of cash swap with no fuel, election psychological stress, inflation and banditry make the situation very bad

  3. It is very pertinent to note that,if any politicians thinking the youth of this country will collect money this time and vote for another suffering again that person should rethink our Mumu done do.we are voting for who will take us to Nigeria of 2013 that the price of things was good not to continue in the hardship we are facing for the past 7, and half years.

  4. I concur the writer is absolutely right, let the Nigeria President do the right thing.
    May God bless Nigeria
