A new state may be created soon, as a bill for the creation of Tiga State from Kano has been presented at the Nigerian Senate.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahman from Kano South had its first reading on July 10, 2024.
The bill, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024 (SB.523)”, aims to split Kano State into two separate states, with Tiga being the new addition to the country’s political map.
Recall that the Senate recently received a bill proposing the creation of Anioma State in the Southeast region, sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko from Delta North.
Additionally, bills have been introduced for the creation of Orlu State, sponsored by Senator Osita Izunaso and Representative Ikenga Ugochineyere, and Etiti State, sponsored by Representative Amobi Godwin Ogah and four other lawmakers from affected communities.
There are also calls for the creation of new states from Lagos and other parts of the country.
